Each of the litanies in this text are meant to be used in the context of public worship, so they're fit for regular congregational use. Pratt's writing is clear and engaging, and the spirituality in the poetry of these responsive prayers is deep. There's no facile Christianity on display here. It's just the sort of resource needed to assist congregations in revitalizing their public faith and the prayers of the people.
The book is divided into five sections with three appendices. The sections include, "Litanies for Looking Forward", "Litanies for Looking Outward", "Litanies for Coping", "Litanies for Church Rituals", and "Litanies for Communal Worship". The Appendices include resources for advent and lent and two litanies for injustice.
But it's the "Litany for Refugees", "Litany for Post-Disaster Trauma", and "Litany for Doing Hard Things" that have particularly captivated my own imagination. Timely prayers that cut through all the rhetoric and bring us right into the very heart of God.
I cannot more highly recommend this book. It's rich and full -- in all the ways that good liturgy must be.
