This week, I'm calling attention in my Friday's Finds to my collection on family ministry. In seminary, one of the more important classes I took was with Dr Jim Street, "The Church and Marriage and Family Counseling". Our primary text was Garland's new Family Ministry. It's a mammoth, practical and at times insightful huge book -- see, e.g., the section on channeling the energies of anger to solve problems not attack people (pages 153ff). Garland helps families by tackling "the basic engineering of our social systems" (231). According to Garland, problems are emotional or psychic injury (234), social and economic forces (76, 272, 300), or social stresses and psychological factors (61, 152, 593). This is an important reference text to which I've returned again and again.
