Nadia Bolz-Weber's Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People is a compulsively readable account of her meetings with many remarkable sinners who still retain the glimmers of God's grace. Ultimately, Accidental Saints is filled with the sorts of sermons -- or, well, sermon ideas -- that bring the healing of the Gospel into contact with real human lives.
Bolz-Weber isn't your typical pastor; she's an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, covered in tattoos, often profane, and convinced that God can be met in the darkest places, just as readily as in any church. Her love for blue language peppers the book, so if that sort of thing offends you, this isn't the book for you.
If, though, you love -- as I do -- stepping through the liturgical year, reflecting on the deepest meanings of Christ's presence in these rites, exploring why God's love should be the heart of every sacred (and secular) experience, well, this is the book for you.
There's healing to be found in Accidental Saints. Because the love of God shines through every page and in the life of every person you meet here. And there's no more healing the world needs now than that love.
This is a book that will be on my shelves for years to come. And it's one to which I return year after year for lots of faith, hope, and, yes, love. Nadia has given the Church a real gift, an incarnational gift. She's given us the story of Jesus in the stories of accidental saints.
