That's because preaching is one of two foci around which the Church gathers every Lord's Day -- text and table. This book helps recover expository preaching after decades of its neglect in the face of more "topical" sermons. Chapter 1 highlights the ways in which that neglect happened in the Church's recent past, only to go forward in outlining a particular way of reading the biblical text that focuses on "the big idea" (i.e., Christocentric idea) from Chapter 2 to Chapter 5.
But it's the "Canonical Interpretation" in Chapter 6 that's the most exciting. There, Pelton rightly calls preachers back to proclaiming the Gospel in its canonical context.
The book closes (Chapter 7) with practical advice that connects this "Canonical Interpretation" to the preaching task itself.
In a preacher's hands, Preaching with Accuracy reclaims the centrality of Jesus Christ to our preaching. It reminded me so much of that one book that has informed and transformed my own preaching habits: Karl Barth's Homiletics.
This is not a book for preachers to be missed this year.
